Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 250 — The prayer times

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about the time of the Fajr prayer, so he said: "Pray it with me today and tomorrow." So when he was at Qa' Namirah in al-Juhfah, he prayed the Fajr prayer just as dawn broke (at the start of its time). Then, when we reached Dhu Tuwa, he delayed this prayer so much that people began to say (in alarm): Has the soul of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) been taken? And they said to one another: If only we had prayed it (ourselves). Then he came out and prayed it shortly before sunrise. Then he turned to the people and asked: "What were you saying?" They said: We said: If only we had prayed (ourselves). He said: "Had you done so, a punishment would have struck you." Then he called the man who had asked and said: "The time of the prayer is between these two times."
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded this hadith. Its chain is broken (munqati') because it is not established that Ali bin Abdullah heard from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him), and it also contains the tadlis of Ibn Jurayj; however, its meaning regarding the fixing of the prayer times is established and supported by other sahih hadith.
