وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا شَبَابٌ الْعُصْفُرِيُّ ، ثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ مُوسَى الْجُهَنِيَّ يَقُولُ : أَخْبَرَنِي الْقَاسِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : مَنْ نَسِيَ أَنْ يَذْكُرَ اللهَ تَعَالَى أَوَّلَ طَعَامِهِ فَلْيَقُلْ حِينَ يَذْكُرُ : بِاسْمِ اللهِ أَوَّلَهُ وَآخِرَهُ ، فَإِنَّهُ يَسْتَقْبِلُ طَعَامَهُ جَدِيدًا ، وَيَمْتَنِعُ الْخَبِيثَ مَا كَانَ يُصِيبُ مِنْهُ .
" صَحَّحَهُ ابْنُ حِبَّانَ " .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever forgets to mention Allah Almighty at the beginning of his meal, let him say when he remembers: 'Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu' (In the name of Allah, at its beginning and at its end), for by saying these words it is as if he begins his meal anew, and the vile devil is prevented from the share of that food that he was getting."
Imam Ibn Hibban (may Allah have mercy on him) graded it sahih (authentic).
