It is narrated from Hakim bin Qays bin Asim that Sayyiduna Qays bin Asim (may Allah be pleased with him), at the time of his death, gave his sons this advice: "I advise you to have taqwa (fear) of Allah Almighty. Make the eldest among you your chief, for when a people make their eldest their chief, they take the place of their forefathers, and when they make their youngest their chief, they become disgraced and worthless in the eyes of their peers. And you must take care of and manage wealth, for it is a means of honour and distinction for the noble man, and through it one becomes free of need of the base man. And beware of begging (asking others)." Then he mentioned the rest of the hadith.
And Imam Abu Ya'la reported (through another chain) a hadith from Qays bin Asim (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: When death approached him, he called his sons and said: "O my sons, take (advice) from me, for no one is more sincere towards you than I am. When I die, make your elders your chiefs and do not make your young ones your chiefs, otherwise people will consider your elders foolish and you will become lightly regarded (worthless) in their eyes. And you must look after wealth and keep it in good order, for it is a means of honour and renown for the noble man, and through it one becomes free of need of the base man." He mentioned the (complete) hadith.
And Imam al-Harith narrated this same hadith (through a third chain) from Qays bin Asim (may Allah be pleased with him).
