It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "When you shoot a bird with an arrow and it falls from a mountain and dies, do not eat it, for I fear that the fall killed it (that is, that it died from falling before being struck by the arrow); and when you shoot a bird with an arrow and it falls into water, do not eat it either, for I fear that the water killed it (that is, that it died from drowning, not from the arrow)."
