Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 2325 — The lawfulness of animals

وَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ ، ثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، ثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عُمَيْرٍ ، عَنْ حُصَيْنٍ ، رَجُلٍ مِنْ [بَنِي] فَزَارَةَ ، عَنْ سَمُرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ وَهُوَ يَخْطُبُ ، فَقَطَعَ عَلَيْهِ خُطْبَتَهُ فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، كَيْفَ تَقُولُ فِي الضَّبِّ ؟ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : إِنَّ أُمَّةً مِنْ بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مُسِخَتْ ، فَلَا أَدْرِي أَيُّ الدَّوَابِّ مُسِخَتْ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering a sermon when a Bedouin came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and, interrupting his sermon, said: "O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about the lizard (dabb, a desert lizard)?" At that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A nation of the Children of Israel was transformed (because of their disobedience), and I do not know into which animals they were transformed."
