حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ عَمْرٍو ، عَنْ طَاوُسٍ ، قَالَ : إِنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ ، وَعَلَيْهِ خَاتَمٌ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ ، فَقَالَ لِلنَّاسِ : إِلَيْكُمْ نَظْرَةٌ ، وَإِلَيْهِ نَظْرَةٌ ، فَرَمَى بِهِ .
It is narrated from Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was seated on the pulpit, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing a gold ring. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed the people and said: 'One glance I cast at you, and one glance at it (the ring).' Having said this, he (peace and blessings be upon him) threw it away."
