قَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ حُمَيْدٍ ، ثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ إِيَادٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ النُّعْمَانِ وَكَانَ جَارًا لِي خَتَمَ الْقُرْآنَ عَلَى عَهْدِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : خَرَجَتْ خَيْلٌ لِرَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَسَمِعَ بِهَا أُكَيْدِرُ دُومَةَ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ ، قَالَ : " ثُمَّ [إِنَّ] أُكَيْدِرَ أَخْرَجَ قُبَاءً مَنْسُوجًا بِالذَّهَبِ مِمَّا كَانَ كِسْرَى يَكْسُوهُمْ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : ارْجِعْ بِقُبَاكَ فَلَيْسَ أَحَدٌ يَلْبَسُ هَذَا فِي الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا حُرِمَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ ، فَرَجَعَ بِهِ فَلَمَّا أَتَى مَنْزِلَهُ وَجَدَ فِي نَفْسِهِ أَنْ يَرُدَّ [عَلَيْهِ] هَدِيَّتَهُ فَرَجَعَ فَقَالَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، إِنَّا أَهْلُ بَيْتٍ يَشُقُّ عَلَيْنَا أَنْ يُرَدَّ هَدِيَّتُنَا فَاقْبَلْ مِنِّي هَدِيَّتِي ، فَقَالَ : انْطَلِقْ فَادْفَعْهُ إِلَى عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، وَقَدْ كَانَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ سَمِعَ مَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِيهِ ، فَبَكَى وَدَمَعَتْ عَيْنَاهُ ، وَظَنَّ أَنْ قَدْ لَحِقَهُ شَقَاءٌ ، فَانْطَلَقَ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : أَحَدَثَ فِيَّ شَيْءٌ ؟ قُلْتُ : فِي هَذَا الْقُبَاءِ مَا سَمِعْتُ ، ثُمَّ بَعَثْتَ بِهِ إِلَيَّ ، فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى فِيهِ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا بَعَثْتُ بِهِ إِلَيْكَ لِتَلْبَسَهُ ، وَلَكِنْ تَبِيعَهُ فَتَسْتَعِينَ بِثَمَنِهِ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qays bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Some horsemen (a patrol) of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out, and news of it reached Ukaydir of Dumat al-Jandal. (Then the narrator did not mention the beginning of the hadith, but said:) "Then Ukaydir presented a gown (qaba') woven with gold, of the garments with which Kisra (the king of Persia) used to clothe them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Take back your gown, for whoever wears this (garment) in this world will be deprived of it in the Hereafter.' So he took it back, but when he reached his home he felt heartache at the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returning the gift (i.e. it displeased him). So he came back and said: 'O Messenger of Allah! We are a household for whom having our gift returned is distressing (or burdensome), so accept my gift from me.' He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Go and give it to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).' Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had come to know what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had said about this (gown), so he wept and his eyes shed tears, and he thought that some misfortune had befallen him (or that wretchedness had overtaken him). So he went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: 'Has something (new) happened concerning me? I heard (only) that about this gown (i.e. your saying that the one who wears it will be deprived in the Hereafter), and yet you (peace and blessings be upon him) sent it to me!' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled until he (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand over his mouth (out of modesty, or to restrain his laughter), then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'I did not send it to you so that you would wear it, but (I sent it) so that you would sell it and benefit from its price.'"
