It is narrated from Muhammad bin Ka'b (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) was once invited to a meal. When he arrived, he saw that the house had been adorned with curtains and decorations (munajjad), so he sat outside and began to weep. He was asked: "What makes you weep?" He said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said," and then he narrated the hadith (the gist of which was) that one day he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man who had patched his cloak with a piece of fur. He (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards the sunrise and gestured like this with his hand (the narrator of the hadith, Hammad bin Salamah, described that he (peace and blessings be upon him) spread out the palms of both his hands and stretched them forward): "The world will (overshadow you and) surge upon you to such an extent that we will think it is going to fall upon us; one of you will go out in the morning in one suit of clothes and in the evening in another, and you will cover your houses with curtains (i.e. adorn them with curtains and decorations) just as you cover the Ka'bah."
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) said (describing his state): "How can I not weep when I see you adorning your houses just as the Ka'bah is adorned!"
