وَقَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ ، عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ : إِنَّكُمْ قَدِ ابْتُلِيتُمْ بِذَا السُّلْطَانِ وَابْتُلِيَ بِكُمْ ، فَإِنْ عَدَلَ كَانَ لَهُ الْأَجْرُ ، وَكَانَ عَلَيْكُمُ الشُّكْرُ ، وَإِنْ جَارَ كَانَ عَلَيْهِ الْوِزْرُ ، وَعَلَيْكُمُ الصَّبْرُ " .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "You have been put to trial through this ruler (sultan), and he has been put to trial through you. So if he is just and fair, he will have the reward, and gratitude is due from you; and if he is unjust and oppressive, the burden of sin will be upon him, and patience is due from you."
