It is narrated from Abu Uthman (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Utbah bin Farqad (may Allah be pleased with him) sent to the Commander of the Believers, Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him), some khabis (a delicious sweet made from dates and ghee) that had been prepared with great care; it was placed in baskets (silal) and covered over with felt cloths (lubud). When the gift reached Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he removed the covering from the load and asked: "Do all the Muslims eat their fill of this in their homes?" The messenger replied: No. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I have no need of it," and he wrote to Sayyiduna Utbah (may Allah be pleased with him): "To proceed: this is neither your own earning nor the fruit of your mother's toil, so feed the other Muslims who are with you to their fill with what you yourself eat."
The rest of this hadith has been recorded by the other hadith scholars.
Imam Abu Ya'la also narrated it with his chain.
And al-Harith narrated with his chain from Abu Uthman, who said: I was with Sayyiduna Utbah bin Farqad (may Allah be pleased with him) in Azerbaijan when he sent Suhaym and another man to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) with two large baskets loaded on three mounts. The baskets were filled with khabis (sweet), over which leather (udm) and then felt cloths had been placed. When they reached Madinah, it was announced that Utbah's freed slave Suhaym and another man had come with three camels. They were given permission and came in. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked them: "Have you brought gold or silver?" They said: No. He asked: "Then what have you brought?" They said: Food. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said (in astonishment): "Food for two men, on three camels!! Bring what you have brought and show it." When it was brought and he removed the felt cloths and the leather, he put his hand into it and found it very soft. He (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Do all the Muhajirun eat their fill of such food?" He said: No, rather this was prepared especially for the Commander of the Believers. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O so-and-so, bring the inkpot," and he dictated: "From the servant of Allah, Umar, Commander of the Believers, to Utbah bin Farqad and the Muslims with him. Peace be upon you. To proceed: I praise before you Allah, besides whom there is no god worthy of worship. To proceed: O Utbah bin Farqad, this (wealth and bounty) is neither your earning nor the earning of your father or your mother." (The narrator mentioned the rest of the hadith.) And in this letter of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) it was also written: "Cut off the stirrups and mount the horses by leaping onto them." Abu Uthman said: I saw an old man trying to leap onto a horse and falling on his belly; he fell again and again but kept trying, and later I saw him leaping onto a horse like a young man.
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded a similar narration with his chain through Asim.
