Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), that he said: Two disputing parties came with their quarrel to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Amr, judge between the two of them." I said: "O Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), you (peace and blessings be upon him) are more entitled to that (judging)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Even if that is so (you still judge)." I said: "On what basis shall I judge?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the basis that if you judge correctly between them, you will have ten good deeds, and if you exert your utmost effort (ijtihad) but err, you will have one good deed."
I (Ibn Hajar) say: Faraj bin Fadalah is a weak narrator, and this hadith is in the two Sahihs from Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) but with a different wording (siyaq), and in it are these words: "When (the judge) exerts his effort (ijtihad) and reaches the correct judgement, he has two rewards."
