It is narrated from Hajjaj bin Abdullah al-Nasri: "The nafl (an award given in addition to the share of the spoils) is a right; the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave nafl." Imam al-Baghawi, Abu Nu'aym, al-Hasan bin Sufyan, al-Bawardi and al-Tabarani transmitted this report through various chains; however, technically this hadith is ma'lul (has a hidden defect). Ibn A'idh in al-Maghazi transmits by way of al-Walid, Sa'id bin Abd al-Aziz, Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid bin Tamim and Hafs bin Ghaylan that they all heard Makhul relate: "On the day of Badr, one group of the Muslims fought the enemy while another group stood firm beside the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the group that had fought came with the belongings of the slain and other things they had obtained, so the spoils were divided among them" (then he mentioned the complete story). Makhul said: "This hadith was related to me by al-Hajjaj bin Suhayl al-Basri, and it was only my awe of his dignity that kept me from asking him about its chain." Our shaykh said: "This indicates that this report is not established (with a connected chain) from a Companion of the Messenger, and also that the name of this narrator's father is Suhayl, not Abdullah."
