قَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ بْنِ وَهْبٍ الْخَوْلَانِيِّ ، قَالَ : شَهِدْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ بِالْجَابِيَةِ ، فَحَمِدَ اللهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ بِمَا هُوَ أَهْلُهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ : أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنَّ هَذَا الْفَيْءَ أَفَاءَهُ اللهُ عَلَيْكُمُ ، الرَّفِيعُ فِيهِ وَالْوَضِيعُ بِمَنْزِلَةٍ ، لَيْسَ بِأَحَدٍ أَحَقَّ بِهِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ ، إِلَّا مَا كَانَ مِنْ هَذَيْنِ الْحَيَّيْنِ : لَخْمٍ وَجُذَامَ ، فَإِنِّي غَيْرُ قَاسِمٍ لَهُمْ شَيْئًا ، فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ لَخْمٍ فَقَالَ : يَا ابْنَ الْخَطَّابِ ، أَنْشُدُكَ اللهَ فِي الْعَدْلِ . فَقَالَ : إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ ابْنُ الْخَطَّابِ الْعَدْلَ وَالسَّوِيَّةَ ، وَاللهِ إِنِّي لَأَعْلَمُ لَوْ كَانْتِ الْهِجْرَةُ بِصَنْعَاءَ مَا خَرَجَ إِلَيْهَا مِنْ لَخْمٍ وَجُذَامَ إِلَّا الْقَلِيلُ ، فَلَا أَجْعَلُ مَنْ تَكَلَّفَ السَّفَرَ وَابْتَاعَ الظَّهْرَ قَوْمٌ ، إِنَّمَا قَاتَلُوا فِي دِيَارِهِمْ . فَقَامَ أَبُو حُدَيْرِجٍ فَقَالَ : يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ، إِنْ كَانَ اللهُ تَعَالَى سَاقَ إِلَيْنَا الْهِجْرَةَ فِي دِيَارِنَا فَنَصَرْنَاهَا وَصَدَّقْنَاهَا ، فَذَاكَ الَّذِي يُذْهِبُ حَقَّنَا فِي الْإِسْلَامِ ؟ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : وَاللهِ لَأَقْسِمَنَّ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ ، ثُمَّ قَسَمَ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ ، فَأَصَابَ كُلُّ رَجُلٍ نِصْفَ دِينَارٍ ، وَإِذَا كَانَتْ مَعَهُ امْرَأَتُهُ أَعْطَاهُ دِينَارًا ، وَإِذَا كَانَ جَدَّهُ أَعْطَاهُ نِصْفَ دِينَارٍ .
Sayyiduna Sufyan bin Wahb al-Khawlani (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: I was present with Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) at al-Jabiyah. He (may Allah be pleased with him) praised and extolled Allah Almighty as befits Him, then said: "To proceed: This fay' is what Allah Almighty has granted you. In it the one of high rank and the one of ordinary standing are (all) equal; no one has any precedence over another in it, except for these two tribes, Lakhm and Judham, for I will not distribute anything among them." Then a man from the tribe of Lakhm stood up and said: "O Ibn al-Khattab! I adjure you by Allah regarding justice." He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Ibn al-Khattab wants nothing but justice and equality. By Allah! I know well that had the Hijrah been to San'a, very few of Lakhm and Judham would have migrated there. So I cannot treat those who bore the hardships of travel and bought mounts as equal to people who merely fought while remaining in their own lands." Then Abu Hudayrij stood up and said: "O Commander of the Believers! If Allah Almighty brought the Hijrah to us in our own lands, and we supported it and affirmed it, will that take away our right in Islam?" At that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! I will certainly give (you too) a share," and he (may Allah be pleased with him) repeated this three times. Then he distributed the wealth among the people, and each man received half a dinar; if his wife was with him, he gave him a dinar, and if his grandfather was with him, he gave him half a dinar as well.
