It is narrated from Suwayd bin Ghafalah (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man from among the dhimmis goaded the donkey of a Muslim woman (prodding it to make it bolt) and then laid hands on her (pulling at her). Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) came between him and the woman and struck him. Then the man came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and mentioned the incident to him, whereupon Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) summoned the woman and questioned her, and she confirmed Sayyiduna Awf's (may Allah be pleased with him) account. So he (may Allah be pleased with him) issued an order concerning that man, and he was crucified. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said (addressing the people): "O people! Fear Allah regarding those who live under the covenant of protection of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and do not wrong them; but whoever among them commits a vile act like this, his covenant of protection is ended."
