Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 1875 — The prohibition of sitting on the bed

It is narrated from Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man from the outlying settlements came to Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him). When he opened his quiver, a note fell out of it, on which this lament in verse was written: "Beware! Convey this message of mine to Abu Hafs (Sayyiduna Umar): may my izar (that is, my family) be a ransom for you, from a trustworthy brother. (Look after) our young she-camels, may Allah guide you (may Allah bless you with guidance and steadfastness); we were kept busy away from you on the battlefield because of the siege by the enemy, while the young she-camels of Banu Sa'd bin Bakr, Aslam, Juhaynah or Ghifar are kept in his grip by a man named Ja'dah of Banu Sulaym; he covets even the smallest of things. These young she-camels have been found tethered behind Mount Sal' in the settlements of the Ansari tribes." Reading this complaint, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered, "Bring Ja'dah bin Sulaym to me." So he was brought, and he (may Allah be pleased with him) questioned him severely; then at his order he was bound tightly and given a hundred lashes, and he (may Allah be pleased with him) sternly warned him never again to go to a woman whose husband was away from home.
This incident makes clear the juristic and administrative principle that the ruler of an Islamic state must ensure the protection of the homes and the honour of the mujahidin who are busy on the battlefront, and must give exemplary punishment to elements who spread mischief in their absence.
