قَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عِيسَى ، ثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي الْعَمْيَاءِ ، قَالَ : إِنَّ سَهْلَ بْنَ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ بْنِ سَهْلٍ حَدَّثَهُ : أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ هُوَ وَأَبُوهُ عَلَى أَنَسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ . فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ ، قَالَ : ثُمَّ غَدَوْا مِنَ الْغَدِ ، فَقَالُوا : نَرْكَبُ نَنْظُرُ وَنَعْتَبِرُ ، قَالَ : نَعَمْ ، فَرَكِبُوا جَمِيعًا فَإِذَا هُمْ بِدِيَارٍ قَفْرٍ قَدْ بَادَ أَهْلُهَا وَانْقَرَضُوا ، وَبَقِيَتْ خَاوِيَةً عَلَى عُرُوشِهَا ، فَقَالُوا : أَتَعْرِفُ هَذِهِ الدِّيَارَ ؟ قَالَ : مَا أَعْرَفَنِي بِهَا وَبِأَهْلِهَا ، هَؤُلَاءِ أَهْلُ دِيَارٍ أَهْلَكَهُمُ الْبَغْيُ وَالْحَسَدُ ، إِنَّ الْحَسَدَ يُطْفِئُ نُورَ الْحَسَنَاتِ ، وَالْبَغْيُ يُصَدِّقُ ذَلِكَ أَوْ يُكَذِّبُهُ ، وَالْعَيْنُ تَزْنِي وَكَذَا الْكَفُّ وَالْقَدَمُ وَالْيَدُ وَاللِّسَانُ ، وَالْفَرْجُ يُصَدِّقُ ذَلِكَ أَوْ يُكَذِّبُهُ .
It is narrated from Sahl bin Abi Umamah bin Sahl that he and his father came to Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). The narrator related the whole incident, (saying) that then they rose the next morning and consulted, "Let us ride out so that we may observe (the area) and take a lesson." Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Yes." So they all set out riding, and suddenly they passed by some desolate settlements whose inhabitants had perished and been destroyed, and those settlements were 'fallen down upon their roofs' [Surah al-Baqarah: 259]. They asked, "Do you know these dwellings?" Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I know these settlements and their inhabitants well. These are the homes of people whom mutual transgression and envy destroyed. Indeed, envy extinguishes the light of good deeds, and transgression confirms it or belies it; and the eye commits zina, and likewise the palm, the foot, the hand and the tongue commit zina, while a person's private part confirms that act or belies it."
