Sayyiduna Ja'far bin Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Muhammad al-Baqir (may Allah have mercy on him)) that a man presented a skin of wine as a gift to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) (apparently) ordered it to be sold, but when the man began to leave, he (peace and blessings be upon him) called out and said: "Indeed, the One (Allah) who has made drinking it unlawful has also made selling it (buying and selling it) unlawful." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that its tie be undone, so it was opened (and poured out).
According to the commentators of hadith, this establishes the legal principle that the trade in a thing that is unlawful in itself, and the income gained from it, are also unlawful, and that after the prohibition of wine, any kind of dealing in it is impermissible.
