It is narrated from al-Ala bin Badr that a man drank wine or tila' (thick boiled-down grape juice) (the narrator Hushaym was in doubt about this word), so he was brought before Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him). He claimed (in his defence): I only drank something lawful. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) found this statement of his even more serious and grave than his deed. Then he consulted (the Companions) on the matter, and they advised him to give him eighty (80) lashes. Thereafter this very procedure became an established sunnah and prevailing practice after him.
