It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever a man spends on his family, his children and his property is written for him as charity, and the wealth by which a person protects his honour and reputation is also counted as charity for him."
He (peace and blessings be upon him) further said: "Every expenditure of a believer that is not in acts of disobedience to Allah, Allah, Glorified and Exalted, guarantees to grant a better replacement for it, except expenditure on buildings."
The narrator says: We said to Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Abu Abdullah! What is the meaning of his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying, 'the wealth by which a person protects his honour'?" He explained that it refers to wealth given to a poet or a sharp-tongued person (to escape his slander); as if his meaning was that by giving such a person wealth one protects one's honour from the evil of his tongue.
