It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah al-Damri (may Allah be pleased with him) that once he went to the market and began bargaining over a wrap. Meanwhile Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived there and asked: "O Amr! What is this matter?" He said: "I want to buy it and then give it in charity," at which Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) expressed his pleasure (in approval of him). So Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) bought the wrap, went home and said to his wife: "I have given this wrap to you in charity." Then, when he went back to the market and sat in his place, he met Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), who asked: "What became of that wrap?" He told him the whole story and said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whatever you give them (your wives) is charity on your behalf.'" Hearing this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said (out of caution): "Do not attribute a lie to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)!" The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the door of the Mother of the Believers Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and called: "O kind mother!" She answered: "O Amr! Is all well?" He said: "Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) thinks that I am attributing something false to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I ask you by Allah: did you hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whatever you give them is charity for you'?" She answered: 'Allahumma, na'am' (O Allah, yes; he certainly said this).
This incident is also mentioned in other chains, in which Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) is mentioned. I (Ibn Hajar) say: However, one of its narrators, Muhammad bin Abi Humayd, is da'if (weak), and in some chains the words 'from his grandfather' have no place, since Umayyah was not a Companion, as I have made clear in my book on the Companions.
In the narration of Abu Ya'la, Sayyiduna Uthman or Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with them both) is mentioned: he considered the price of the wrap too high, so Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) bought it and clothed his wife Sukhaylah bint Ubaydah with it. When that elder asked what had become of the wrap, he said that he had given it to his wife in charity, and that he had heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "Whatever kindness you do to your wife is charity." Afterwards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also confirmed this, saying: "Amr has spoken the truth; whatever good you do to your family is indeed charity."
