It is narrated from Zayd bin Isma'il or Ziyad bin Isma'il (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade having a child nursed by a foolish and dim-witted woman, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Milk creates resemblance (to the nursing woman)."
According to the imams and commentators, the meaning of this hadith is that the hidden qualities, character and temperament of the nursing woman can be transferred to the child through the milk; therefore, for the sound intellectual and physical development of the child, a woman of good character and sound intellect should be chosen.
