It is narrated from Abu Salih al-Hanafi (may Allah have mercy on him) that Ibn al-Kawwa' asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) about two slave women who are sisters of one another. He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "One verse has made them lawful and another verse has made them unlawful. I myself do not do it, nor does anyone of my household, and I neither declare it lawful nor declare it unlawful."
According to the narration of Imam Abu Ya'la, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Ask me! For you will not find (in your time) anyone like me to ask, and you will never again be able to ask anyone like me." Thereupon Ibn al-Kawwa' said: "Tell us about two owned sisters and about the foster niece (brother's daughter through nursing)." He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Ask about what concerns you, for you are wandering in the valley of aimless bewilderment." He said: "I am only asking you about what we do not know; as for what we know, we do not ask about it." He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "As for two sisters who are owned, one verse, 'or what your right hands possess' [Surah al-Nisa: 3], has made them lawful in general, and another verse, 'and that you combine two sisters' [Surah al-Nisa: 23], has made (combining two sisters at the same time) unlawful. So I neither command it nor forbid it, and neither I myself do it nor does anyone of my household."
