It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn al-Zubayr (or Abu al-Zubayr) (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came into the noble presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: My wife does not push away the hand of one who touches her (that is, she is careless in her dealings with strange men). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Divorce her." The man said: She is a very beautiful woman and I love her dearly. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then keep her with you and enjoy her."
According to the commentators of hadith, one meaning given for this sentence is that the woman was extremely generous and would not turn any beggar away empty-handed; however, according to the majority of hadith scholars it refers to her softness and lack of caution with regard to strange men. He (peace and blessings be upon him) first advised him to divorce her out of the protective jealousy of faith, but when the man expressed his intense attachment to her and his inability to bear being without her, he (peace and blessings be upon him) granted him the concession of keeping the marriage, so that the man would not fall into a greater sin or trial.
