Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 1649 — A woman's duty of housework

It is narrated from Damrah bin Habib (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) decided that his daughter Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) would take charge of the household work and service inside the home, and assigned to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) all the affairs of life outside the home: "Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) will manage the internal service and housekeeping of the home, while Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) will be responsible for all the running about, labour and toil outside the home."
According to the commentators of hadith, this prophetic decision is the golden principle of the division of work between husband and wife in Islamic social life, which guarantees the stability and balance of the household.
