أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ : حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو النَّضْرِ ، ثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ ، عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ سُلَيْمٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا ، قَالَ : " إِنْ كَانَ قَالَ فِيهِ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَيْئًا فَهُوَ كَمَا قَالَ ، يَعْنِي الْعَزْلَ . وَأَنَا لَا أَرَى بِهِ بَأْسًا ، زَرْعُكَ ; إِنْ شِئْتَ أَعْطَشْتَ ، وَإِنْ شِئْتَ سَقَيْتَ ".
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that, about 'azl (i.e. withdrawing before ejaculation during intercourse), he said: "If the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has said anything about it, then it is true and is just as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said," and I personally see nothing objectionable in this practice; it is your own field: if you wish, keep it thirsty, and if you wish, water it.
This report establishes that there is latitude in the Shari'ah in the matter of 'azl, and Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) explained this issue with an eloquent agricultural example: just as a farmer has the choice of watering his land or not, likewise the matter of depositing the seed or not is within the husband's choice.
