Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 1449 — Loans, warning against taking debts

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah and Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) that they said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered a sermon to us; then the narrator related a long hadith in which there is also this (saying): "And whoever lends to someone distressed and crying for help, and then is kind and gracious in demanding (repayment), let him begin his deeds anew (that is, he is cleansed of sins), and with Allah Almighty there is for him in Paradise, for every dirham, a reward of a thousand qintars; and whoever lends to his Muslim brother will receive, for every dirham, good deeds equal in weight to Mount Uhud, Mount Hira and Mount Sinai; then if he is gentle with him in demanding it even after the term of the loan has ended, the reward of charity will continue for him for every day, and he will cross the Sirat like flashing lightning, with neither reckoning nor punishment upon him; and whoever is approached by his Muslim brother in need of a loan and does not lend to him although he has (the wealth), Allah Almighty will forbid Paradise to him on the Day when He rewards those who do good."
