It is narrated from Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in Masjid al-Khayf, and his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions said to me: O Wathilah, move back, that is, move away from in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Leave him, he has only come to ask.' So I came closer and said: O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you, give us a ruling on a matter which we may take from you after you (are gone). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Seek a ruling from your own self.' I said: How can that be? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Leave what puts you in doubt for what does not put you in doubt, even if the muftis give you rulings.' I said: How will I recognise that? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Place your hand on your heart; the heart is at ease with the lawful and is not at ease with the unlawful. The scrupulousness (wara') of a Muslim is that he leaves even a small doubtful thing out of fear of falling into a major sin.' I said: Then who is the greedy one? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'The one who seeks earnings from other than their lawful source.' I said: Then who is the scrupulous one? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'The one who stops at what is doubtful.' I said: Then who is the believer? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'The one whom people trust with their wealth and their lives.' I said: Then who is the Muslim? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'The one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe.' I said: Then which jihad is the best? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'The best jihad is to speak a word of truth before a tyrannical ruler.'" Note: Al-Ala' bin Tha'labah is majhul (unknown), as Abu Hatim said; however, the different parts of the text have separate supporting reports (shawahid).
