Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 1275 — The sermon on the Day of Sacrifice

It is narrated from Sayyidah al-Surra bint Nabhan bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with her) (who in the time of the Jahiliyyah was the custodian and head of a respected household) that she said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say during the Farewell Hajj: "Do you know what day this is?" The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is the middle of the Days of Tashriq." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you know what land this is?" They said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is al-Mash'ar al-Haram (the sacred site)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I do not know; perhaps I will not meet you again after this year of mine. Take heed! Your blood, your wealth and your honour are sacred and inviolable to one another, just as the sanctity of this day of yours in this land of yours, until you meet Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and He asks you about your deeds. Take heed! Let whoever of you is present convey it to those who are absent (far away)." The narrator (she) says: Then after that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Allahumma hal ballaghtu? Allahumma hal ballaghtu?' ("O Allah, have I conveyed (Your message)? O Allah, have I conveyed it?"). Then, some time after returning to Madinah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away.
Besides Imam Abu Ya'la, Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin Ar'arah and Ya'qub have also narrated this hadith through Abu Asim, while Imam Abu Dawud narrated it in abridged form with this same chain in his Sunan.
