It is narrated from Humayd bin Abd al-Rahman that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to send sacrificial animals (hady) (towards the Haram), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would instruct the person with whom he sent the animals: "If any of them becomes exhausted (and close to perishing), slaughter it, then dye its sandal (which has been hung on its neck as a mark) in its blood and mark one side of its neck with it (so that it is known to be a sacrificial animal), and let the travellers who come after you eat it; but do not eat anything of it yourself, nor should any companion of your caravan eat anything of it."
Imam Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) also used to act according to this prophetic instruction regarding sacrificial animals.
