Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 1248 — Supplication on the Day of Arafah

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty takes pride before the angels in those standing in the plain of Arafat, and He says: 'O My angels, just look at these servants of Mine who, with dishevelled hair and dust-covered faces, have come to My presence "from every distant pass" (Surah al-Hajj: 27), that is, covering long distances by every far-off road. Bear witness that I have accepted their supplication, I have forgiven the sinners among them on the intercession of the righteous among them, and I have given the righteous among them everything they asked of Me, except the rights that they owe one another.' Then, when they departed from Arafat and reached Muzdalifah, they again turned to Allah Almighty in weeping, supplication and earnest entreaty. Then Allah Almighty said: 'O My angels, these servants of Mine have asked of Me again, so bear witness that I have granted acceptance to their supplications, I have forgiven the wrongdoers among them for the sake of the righteous among them, I have given the righteous among them all that they asked for, and I Myself have also taken responsibility for the mutual rights and claims between them' (that is, I Myself will satisfy the one who is owed and remove their burdens)."
Imam Abu Ya'la has also narrated something close in meaning in his narration, in which it is stated explicitly: "I have given the righteous among them all the things they asked of Me, except those mutual rights." It also contains these words: "O My angels, My servants stood and turned back to Me again with complete longing and seeking, so I make you witnesses that I have answered their call," to the end.
