It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amir bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him): I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during tawaf when the strap of his (peace and blessings be upon him) sandal broke. I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Give it to me so that I may repair it." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is a kind of preferential treatment, and I do not like preferential treatment." Imam Abu Ya'la also recorded this same report with these words: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was performing tawaf of the House of Allah when the strap of his (peace and blessings be upon him) sandal broke. A man took a strap out of his own sandal and tried to fit it to the sandal of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but he (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped him from that and said: "This is a kind of preference (seeking superiority over others or special favour), and I do not like such preference."
This blessed hadith was recorded by Imam Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi and Imam Abu Ya'la in their Musnads, and it gives a great lesson in the incomparable humility and simplicity of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and in his avoidance of any kind of special protocol or preferential treatment in religious and social affairs.
