Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 1131 — The virtue of the pilgrim

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in Masjid al-Khayf when a man from the Ansar and a man from Thaqif came to him. After greeting him with salam, the two of them said: O Messenger of Allah, we have come to ask you some questions. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you wish, I will tell you myself what you have come to ask me; and if you wish that I remain silent and you ask yourselves, then do so." They said: O Messenger of Allah, you tell us, so that our faith and certainty may increase further. Then the Ansari, putting the other first, said to the Thaqafi: You ask first. But he replied: No, rather you ask first, for I recognise your right of precedence. So the Ansari said: O Messenger of Allah, you tell us. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have come to me to ask: what is the reward of your leaving your home intending the House of Allah? What is the reward of the tawaf of the Ka'bah and of praying two rak'ahs after it? What is the standing of the sa'i between Safa and Marwah? What is the virtue of standing at Arafat, stoning the Jamarat, offering the sacrifice, shaving the head, and after that performing the Tawaf al-Ifadah?" The man said: By the One who sent you with the truth! I came to ask about exactly these matters. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, when you leave your home intending the House of Allah, for every step your she-camel puts down or lifts up, Allah Almighty writes one good deed for you, wipes out one sin, and raises you one degree. Your tawaf of the House of Allah and praying two rak'ahs after it is equal to freeing a slave from the descendants of Isma'il; performing the sa'i between Safa and Marwah is equivalent to freeing seventy slaves; and when you stand there on the evening of Arafah, Allah Almighty descends (in a manner befitting His majesty) to the lowest heaven and, taking pride in you before the angels, says: 'Look, these are My servants who have come to Me dishevelled and covered in dust, by distant paths, from every deep mountain pass [Surah al-Hajj: 27], hoping for My mercy and forgiveness. Even if your sins were equal to the grains of sand or the foam of the sea, I would still forgive them. O My servants, go back, all of you forgiven, and forgiven too are those for whom you intercede.' And stoning the Jamarat becomes an expiation for your major sins that destroy a person; your sacrifice is stored up for you with your Lord; and for shaving the head, for every hair one good deed is written and one sin is wiped out." The man said: O Messenger of Allah, what if the sins are fewer than these good deeds? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then these merits will be stored up in the scale of your good deeds. As for your tawaf of the Ka'bah after that, you perform it in a state in which no sin remains upon you, until an angel comes and places his hand between your two shoulders and says: 'Now begin your deeds afresh, for all your past sins have been forgiven.'"
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the mention of this hadith has already passed in the section on prayer.
