Al-Matalib al-'Aliyah 1103 — Fasting three days of every month

Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fasting Ramadan and fasting three days every month remove the heat of the chest, and rancour and envy." The Companions said: O Messenger of Allah, what is meant by the heat of the chest (waghar al-sadr)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It means the pain of the chest and its rancour and hatred."
According to the scholars of hadith, 'waghar' means the intense anger, heat and enmity that boils up in a person's chest; through the blessing of fasting the lower self is subdued, and these ailments of the heart and the inner self are removed at the root.
