Imam Abu Ya'la says that Ubaydullah bin Mu'adh narrated to us, from his father, from Imran, that Ayyub bin Abi Tamimah said: Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) became unable to fast (extremely weak) due to old age, so he (may Allah be pleased with him) had a large bowl of tharid (bread prepared in meat broth) made, then invited thirty poor people and fed them to their fill.
Explanation: The scholars of hadith and fiqh derive from this report that an elderly person, or a chronically ill person with no hope of recovery, who does not have the strength to fast, is to feed one poor person in place of each fast, as stated in the Noble Qur'an: "And upon those who are able to fast (but with hardship) is a ransom: the feeding of a poor person." [Surah al-Baqarah: 184].
