Sayyiduna Amr bin al-Hamiq (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent out an expedition. They said: O Messenger of Allah! You are sending us out, and we have no provisions for the journey, nor anything to eat, nor do we know the way. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You will soon pass by a man with a handsome face; he will feed you food, give you drink and guide you on the way, and he is one of the people of Paradise. The narrator says: When those people came and halted with me, they began pointing to one another. I said: You are pointing to one another and looking at me? Those people said: Accept the glad tidings from Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), for we have recognised in you the description that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave. They told me what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said to them. So I fed those people, gave them water to drink and gave them provisions for the journey; then I went out with them and showed them the way. Then I returned home and gave my family instructions about my camels. Then I set out and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: To what do you call? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I call to bearing witness that there is no god but Allah Almighty and that I am the Messenger of Allah, and to establishing the prayer, giving zakah, performing Hajj to the House of Allah and fasting in Ramadan. I said: If we accept this call of yours, will we then be safe with regard to our families, our lives and our wealth? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Very well. So I accepted Islam. Then I went back to my family and told them about my acceptance of Islam, and many people accepted Islam at my hands. Then I migrated and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
One day I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said to me: O Amr! Would you like me to show you a sign of Paradise, who eats food, drinks and walks in the markets? I said: May my father be sacrificed for you, yes! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This man and his people. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this while pointing with his blessed hand towards Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). He said to me: O Amr! Would you like me to show you a sign of Hell, who eats food, drinks and walks in the markets? I said: Yes! May my father be sacrificed for you. He said: This man and his people are a sign of Hell. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this while pointing towards a man.
The narrator says: When the tribulation (fitnah) occurred, I remembered the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I fled from the sign of Hell to the sign of Paradise. He used to say that after this Banu Umayyah would kill him. I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: By Allah! Even if I were inside a rock, they would search me out and kill me. My beloved (peace and blessings be upon him) told me this: that my head will be the first head to be cut off in Islam, and it will be carried from one city to another.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Abd al-Malik al-Mas'udi, who is da'if (weak).
