Al-'Asi bin Amr al-Tufawi narrates: Sayyiduna Abu al-'Adiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Habib bin al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyidah Umm al-Ala (may Allah be pleased with her) set out as emigrants to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and accepted Islam. The woman submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! Give me some advice." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Beware of what is displeasing to the ears."
This narration was recorded by Abdullah and by Imam al-Tabarani; however, he recorded it thus: Al-'Asi bin Amr al-Tufawi said: My paternal aunt told me; she said: "I entered upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) along with some people and submitted: 'Tell me something by which Allah Almighty will benefit me.' He said: 'Beware of what is displeasing to the ears.'" The chain of this narration contains a narrator, al-'Asi bin Amr al-Tufawi, who is mastur (of unestablished status); Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman al-Tufawi and Tammam bin Bazi' narrated from him. The remaining narrators of the Musnad are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this as a marfu' hadith: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sometimes a man says a word by which he intends no harm, his aim being only to make people laugh with it, yet because of that word he falls (into the depths of Hell) a distance greater than that of the sky."
This narration was recorded by Imam Ahmad, and its chain contains a narrator, Abu Isra'il Isma'il bin Khalifah, who is da'if (weak).
