Thabit al-Bunani reports from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), or perhaps from someone else, about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Once he sought permission to enter from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah." Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Wa alayka as-salam wa rahmatullah," but his reply was not heard by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (that is, he replied in a low voice). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) greeted three times, and Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) replied all three times, but not loudly enough for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to hear it (the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was at the door). He turned back, and Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) came after him and said: "O Messenger of Allah! May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! Every time you gave the greeting, it reached my ears, and I replied to you too, but I did not reply loudly enough for you to hear. I wanted you to greet a great deal, and to receive blessing from you." Then he took the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) into his house and presented raisins to him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ate them, and when he had finished eating, he said: "The righteous have eaten your food, the angels have prayed for forgiveness for you, and those who fast have broken their fast with you."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Abu Dawud has recorded part of this narration.
Ahmad and al-Bazzar recorded it. He (al-Bazzar) says: It is reported from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him); he did not include the words "or from someone else". He narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to visit the Ansar. When he came to one of the quarters of the Ansar, the children of the Ansar would gather around him; he would pray for them, pass his hand over their heads and greet them with salam. Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to the door of Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him); he greeted those people, saying: "As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah." Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, but not loudly enough for the voice to reach the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). This happened three times. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not give the greeting more than three times; if he was given permission to enter, well and good, otherwise he would go back. After this, the narrator mentioned the hadith as before. The narrators of both narrations are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyidah Umm Tariq (may Allah be pleased with her), who was the freedwoman of Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) and sought permission to enter, but Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) remained silent. Then he sought permission again, and Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) remained silent. Then he sought permission once more, and Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) again remained silent. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned back, so Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) sent me to him and submitted: "We did not give you permission only because we wanted you to (keep greeting us) more." After this, the narrator mentioned the complete hadith. The complete narration is in the Book of Medicine, in the chapter on fever.
