عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِذَا خَفِيَتِ الْخَطِيئَةُ لَمْ تَضُرَّ إِلَّا صَاحِبَهَا ، وَإِذَا ظَهَرَتْ فَلَمْ تُغَيَّرْ ضَرَّتِ الْعَامَّةَ " . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ ، وَفِيهِ مَرْوَانُ بْنُ سَالِمٍ الْغِفَارِيُّ وَهُوَ مَتْرُوكٌ .
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a sin is hidden, it harms only the one who commits it, and when it becomes open and is not removed, it harms the people at large."

وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يَقُولُ : " مَا مِنْ رَجُلٍ يَكُونُ فِي قَوْمٍ يَعْمَلُ بِمَعَاصِي اللَّهِ فِيهِمْ ، وَهُمْ أَكْثَرُ مِنْهُ وَأَعَزُّ ، ثُمَّ يَدَّهِنُونَ فِي شَأْنِهِ إِلَّا عَاقَبَهُمُ اللَّهُ " . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْكَبِيرِ وَالْأَوْسَطِ ، وَفِيهِ عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whenever a man is among a people and commits acts of disobedience to Allah Almighty among them, while they are more numerous than him and more powerful, and yet they are lax concerning him, Allah Almighty punishes them all."

وَعَنِ الْعُرْسِ بْنِ عَمِيرَةَ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُعَذِّبُ الْعَامَّةَ بِعَمَلِ الْخَاصَّةِ حَتَّى تَعْمَلَ الْخَاصَّةُ بِعَمَلٍ تَقْدِرُ الْعَامَّةُ أَنْ تُغَيِّرَهُ وَلَا تَغَيُّرُهُ ، فَذَاكَ حِينَ يَأْذَنُ اللَّهُ فِي هَلَاكِ الْعَامَّةِ وَالْخَاصَّةِ " . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَرِجَالُهُ ثِقَاتٌ .
Sayyiduna al-Urs bin Amirah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah Almighty does not punish the common people for the deeds of the particular few. When the particular few do some deed, and the common people have the ability to put an end to it and yet do not put an end to it, then in that case Allah Almighty commands the destruction of the common and the particular (all of them)."

وَعَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ : قِيلَ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَتُهْلَكُ الْقَرْيَةُ فِيهِمُ الصَّالِحُونَ ؟ قَالَ : " نَعَمْ " . فَقِيلَ : لِمَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ؟ قَالَ : " بِشَهَادَتِهِمْ وَسُكُوتِهِمْ عَنْ مَعَاصِي اللَّهِ " . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَفِيهِ يَحْيَى بْنُ يَعْلَى الْأَسْلَمِيُّ وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ . وَكَذَلِكَ رَوَاهُ الْبَزَّارُ بِنَحْوِهِ وَالطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: It was asked: O Messenger of Allah! Will even a town in which there are righteous people be destroyed? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! It was asked: O Messenger of Allah! Why is that? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Because those people were present and yet they remained silent about acts of disobedience to Allah Almighty.

وَعَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ قَالَتْ : سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يَقُولُ : " إِذَا ظَهَرَتِ الْمَعَاصِي فِي أُمَّتِي عَمَّهُمُ اللَّهُ بِعَذَابٍ مِنْ عِنْدِهِ " . فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَمَا فِيهِمْ صَالِحُونَ ؟ قَالَ : " بَلَى " . قُلْتُ : فَكَيْفَ يُصْنَعُ بِأُولَئِكَ ؟ قَالَ : " يُصِيبُهُمْ مَا أَصَابَ النَّاسَ ، ثُمَّ يَصِيرُونَ إِلَى مَغْفِرَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَرِضْوَانٍ " . رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ بِإِسْنَادَيْنِ رِجَالُ أَحَدِهِمَا رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When acts of disobedience become widespread in my Ummah, Allah Almighty will afflict them all with a punishment from Himself. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Will there not be righteous people among them? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! There will be. I said: Then what will happen to them? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever befalls those (sinful) people will befall them (the righteous) as well, and then they will go on to the forgiveness and good pleasure of Allah Almighty."

وَعَنْ عَائِشَةَ تَبْلُغُ بِهِ النَّبِيَّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : " إِذَا ظَهَرَ السُّوءُ فِي أَرْضٍ أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ - عَزَّ وَجَلَّ - بِأَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ بِأَسْهُ " . قَالَتْ : وَفِيهَا أَهْلُ طَاعَةِ اللَّهِ ؟ قَالَ : " نَعَمْ ، ثُمَّ يَصِيرُونَ إِلَى رَحْمَةِ اللَّهِ " . رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَفِيهِ امْرَأَةٌ لَمْ تُسَمَّ .
Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates, tracing it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When evil prevails in a land, Allah Almighty sends down His punishment upon all the people of the land. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: But there are also those in the land who obey Allah Almighty? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! Then they will go on to the mercy of Allah Almighty."

وَعَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِذَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ - تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى - بِقَوْمٍ عَذَابًا أَصَابَ الْعَذَابُ مَنْ كَانَ بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِهِمْ ، ثُمَّ يَبْعَثُهُمُ اللَّهُ - تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى - عَلَى أَعْمَالِهِمْ " . رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَفِيهِ الْحَجَّاجُ بْنُ أَرْطَاةَ وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Allah Almighty sends down punishment upon a people, that punishment strikes everyone among them, and then Allah Almighty will raise them up again according to their deeds."

وَعَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ : ذُكِرَ فِي زَمَنِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - خَسْفٌ قِبَلَ الْمَشْرِقِ ، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، يُخْسَفُ بِأَرْضٍ فِيهَا الْمُسْلِمُونَ ؟ فَقَالَ : " نَعَمْ ، إِذَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُ أَهْلِهَا الْخَبَثَ " . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الصَّغِيرِ وَالْأَوْسَطِ ، وَرِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: In the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) it was reported that some place in the direction of the east had sunk into the earth. A man said: O Messenger of Allah! A land has sunk in which there were also Muslims? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes! That happens when most of the people living there are steeped in wickedness."

وَعَنْ أُمِّ حَبِيبَةَ قَالَتْ : دَخَلَ عَلَيَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَهُوَ يَقُولُ : " إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ ، وَيْلٌ لِلْعَرَبِ مِنْ شَرٍّ قَدِ اقْتَرَبَ ، فُتِحَ مِنْ رَدْمِ يَأْجُوجَ وَمَأْجُوجَ مِثْلُ هَذِهِ " وَحَلَّقَ تِسْعِينَ . قُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، أَنَهْلِكُ وَفِينَا الصَّالِحُونَ ؟ قَالَ : " نَعَمْ ، إِذَا كَثُرَ الْخَبَثُ " . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ ، وَرِجَالُهُ ثِقَاتٌ .
Sayyidah Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to my house, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return). Woe to the Arabs from an evil that has drawn near! This much has been opened in the barrier of Gog and Magog" — the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this while forming a ring (with his fingers) for ninety. I said: "Will we be destroyed while there are righteous people among us?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes! When evil becomes abundant (that is what will happen)."

وَعَنْ بُرَيْدَةَ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا نَقَضَ قَوْمٌ الْعَهْدَ إِلَّا كَانَ الْقَتْلُ بَيْنَهُمْ ، وَلَا ظَهَرَتْ فَاحِشَةٌ فِي قَوْمٍ قَطُّ إِلَّا سَلَّطَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْمَوْتَ ، وَلَا مَنَعَ قَوْمٌ قَطُّ الزَّكَاةَ إِلَّا حَبَسَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمُ الْقَطْرَ " . رَوَاهُ الْبَزَّارُ ، وَرِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ غَيْرَ رَجَاءِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَهُوَ ثِقَةٌ .
Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whenever a people break a covenant, killing breaks out among them; whenever immorality prevails among a people, Allah Almighty sets death upon them; and whenever a people refuse to give zakah, Allah Almighty withholds rain from them."

وَعَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَفَعَهُ قَالَ : " الطَّابَعُ مُعَلَّقٌ بِقَائِمَةِ الْعَرْشِ ، فَإِذَا اشْتَكَتِ الرَّحِمُ وَعُمِلَ بِالْمَعَاصِي وَاجْتُرِئَ عَلَى اللَّهِ بَعَثَ اللَّهُ الطَّابِعَ فَيَطْبَعُ عَلَى قَلْبِهِ فَلَا يَعْقِلُ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ شَيْئًا " . رَوَاهُ الْبَزَّارُ ، وَفِيهِ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ الْخَشَّابُ وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ جِدًّا .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports this as a marfu' hadith: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A seal hangs from the leg of the Throne. When the rights of kinship are trampled, sins are committed and boldness is shown against Allah Almighty, Allah Almighty sends that seal, and it seals the heart of the man, and after that he (the man) understands nothing."

وَعَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : " مَنْ عَمِلَ بِالْمَعَاصِي بَيْنَ ظَهْرَانَيْ قَوْمٍ هُو مِنْهُمْ لَمْ يَمْنَعُوهُمْ مِنْ ذَلِكَ حَتَّى يُغَيِّرُوا الْمُنْكَرَ فَقَدْ بَرِئَتْ مِنْهُمْ ذِمَّةُ اللَّهِ " . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَفِيهِ هَيَّاجُ بْنُ بِسْطَامٍ وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ .
Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When sins are committed among a people and those people do not forbid it and do not put an end to the evil, the protection of Allah is lifted from them."
