Abu Raja' al-Utaridi narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) used to teach us the Qur'an. He would seat us in circles, and he wore two white garments. When he recited this surah: "Read in the name of your Lord who created", Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: This verse was the first to be revealed to Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Abu Jahl said: If Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) prays again facing the qiblah, I will certainly kill him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed again, and Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "Read with the name of your Lord who created", up to: "So let him call his associates; We will call Our soldiers." When Abu Jahl was told that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had done it again, he said: A barrier has come between me and him. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: By Allah! Had he made such a move, the angels would have seized him while the people watched it all.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Musa bin Sahl al-Washsha', who is da'if (weak).

Ahmad reported this from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): He narrates that once Abu Jahl passed by and said: Did I not forbid you? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rebuked him, and he said: O Muhammad! You cannot rebuke me. By Allah! You know that no one here has more companions than I do. The narrator says: Then Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "So let him call his companions." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: By Allah! Had he called his companions, the angels would have seized him with punishment. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Part of this narration is in the "Sahih". The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih.
