Sayyiduna Abu Amir al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man from among those people was killed at Awtas, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Abu Amir! Did you not change it?" Sayyiduna Abu Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) recited this verse: "O you who believe! Upon you is responsibility for yourselves; when you are rightly guided, the one who goes astray will not harm you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry and said: "Where are you going (with this)? It means: O you who believe! Upon you is responsibility for yourselves; whoever of the disbelievers goes astray will not harm you."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and the wording he recorded is: Sayyiduna Abu Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: There was something among those people because of which he could not come to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What held you back?" He said: "I recited this verse: 'O you who believe! Upon you is responsibility for yourselves; when you are rightly guided, the one who has gone astray will not harm you.'" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "The one from the disbelievers who goes astray will not harm you, as long as you are rightly guided." The narrators of both these reports are thiqat (trustworthy), except that I have not found any report of Ali bin Mudrik hearing from any of the Companions.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates concerning this saying of Allah Almighty: (Allah Almighty says:) "Upon you is responsibility for yourselves." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "This is not its time. Speak the word; whatever is accepted from you, well and good. If it is rejected, then upon you is responsibility for yourselves; the one who goes astray will not harm you."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except that al-Hasan al-Basri did not hear from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). And Allah knows best.
