Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said about this saying of Allah Almighty: Allah Almighty says: "That which they withheld out of miserliness will soon be hung around their necks as a collar on the Day of Resurrection." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "A bald serpent with two spots on its mouth will be put around his neck as a collar. It will strike his head with its fangs, and that person will say: 'What do I have to do with you?' It will reply: 'I am your wealth with which you were miserly.'"

In a narration that is also reported from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "Whoever has wealth and does not pay its zakah, on the Day of Resurrection it will be put around his neck as a collar in the form of a bald serpent. It will strike his head with its fangs and say: 'I am your wealth with which you used to be miserly.'" This is what is meant by the saying of Allah Almighty: "That which they withheld out of miserliness will be hung around their necks as a collar on the Day of Resurrection." Al-Tabarani recorded all these narrations with various chains, and the narrators of one of them are thiqat (trustworthy).
