Abu Jabirah bin al-Dahhak narrates: The Ansar used to give in charity and give whatever Allah willed. Then a year of drought struck them, and they held back from doing so. So Allah Almighty revealed this verse concerning it: "Do not throw (yourselves) with your own hands into destruction."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and added in it these words: "And do good; indeed Allah Almighty loves those who do good." The narrators of both narrations are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Formerly, a man would commit a sin and then say: Allah Almighty will not forgive me. So Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "Do not throw (yourselves) with your own hands into destruction, and do good; indeed Allah Almighty loves those who do good."
