عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ عَوْفٍ قَالَ : لَمَّا خَرَجَ الْمَجُوسِيُّ مِنْ عِنْدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - سَأَلْتُهُ فَأَخْبَرَنِي أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - خَيَّرَهُ بَيْنَ الْجِزْيَةِ وَالْقَتْلِ ، فَاخْتَارَ الْجِزْيَةَ . رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَسُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ مُوسَى لَمْ يُدْرِكْ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ عَوْفٍ .
Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Magian came out from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I asked him, and he told me that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had given him the choice either to pay the jizyah or be killed, and he chose the jizyah.

وَعَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ : كَانَ الْمَجُوسُ لَهُمْ كِتَابٌ يَقْرَؤُونَهُ ، وَعِلْمٌ يَدْرُسُونَهُ ، فَزَنَى إِمَامُهُمْ ، فَأَرَادُوا أَنْ يُقِيمُوا عَلَيْهِ الْحَدَّ ، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ : أَلَيْسَ آدَمُ كَانَ يُزَوِّجُ بَنِيهِ مِنْ بَنَاتِهِ ؟ فَلَمْ يُقِيمُوا عَلَيْهِ الْحَدَّ ، فَرُفِعَ الْكِتَابُ ، وَقَدْ أَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - الْجِزْيَةَ ، وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ ، وَأَنَا . رَوَاهُ أَبُو يَعْلَى ، وَفِيهِ أَبُو سَعْدٍ الْبَقَّالُ ، وَهُوَ مَتْرُوكٌ .
Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Magians had a (revealed) Book which they used to read, and knowledge which they used to teach. Once their ruler committed adultery, and they intended to carry out the prescribed punishment (hadd) on him. He said to them: Did not Sayyiduna Adam marry his sons to his daughters? So they did not carry out the prescribed punishment on him. Then the knowledge of the Book was taken away. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took the jizyah (from the Magians), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) also did, and I too (take the jizyah).

وَعَنِ السَّائِبِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - أَخَذَ الْجِزْيَةَ مِنْ مَجُوسِ هَجَرَ ، وَأَنَّ عُمَرَ أَخَذَهَا مِنْ مَجُوسِ فَارِسَ ، وَأَخَذَهَا عُثْمَانُ مِنْ بَرْبَرَ . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَرِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ غَيْرَ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ سَلَمَةَ بْنِ أَبِي كَبْشَةَ وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ .
Sayyiduna al-Sa'ib bin Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the jizyah from the Magians of Hajar. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took it from the Magians of Persia, and Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) took it from the Berbers.

وَعَنِ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ الْعَلَاءِ الْحَضَرْمِيِّ قَالَ : شَهِدْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فِيمَا عَهَدَ إِلَى الْعَلَاءِ حِينَ وَجَّهَهُ إِلَى الْبَحْرَيْنِ قَالَ : " وَلَا يَحِلُّ لِأَحَدٍ جَهِلَ الْفَرْضَ وَالسُّنَنَ ، وَيَحِلُّ لَهُ مَا سِوَى ذَلِكَ " . وَكَتَبَ لِلْعَلَاءِ : " أَنْ سُنُّوا بِالْمَجُوسِ سُنَّةَ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ " . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَفِيهِ مَنْ لَمْ أَعْرِفْهُمْ .
Sayyiduna Muslim bin al-Ala al-Hadrami (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he gave instructions to Sayyiduna al-Ala (may Allah be pleased with him) while sending him to Bahrain. He said: It is not lawful for anyone to be ignorant of the obligations and the sunnahs; whatever is besides that is lawful for him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had this written for Sayyiduna al-Ala (may Allah be pleased with him): Treat the Magians as the People of the Book are treated.

وَعَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : " مَنْ أَسْلَمَ فَلَا جِزْيَةَ عَلَيْهِ " . رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَفِيهِ مَنْ لَمْ أَعْرِفْهُمْ .
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever accepts Islam, no jizyah will be imposed on him."
