Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: A man and his mother came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The man wanted to go out for jihad and his mother was stopping him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stay with your mother, for by staying with your mother you will receive as much reward as you would receive for taking part in jihad." Then another man came and said: "I have vowed that I will sacrifice myself." The attention of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was elsewhere, and the man and his mother went away; then the man was found about to sacrifice himself. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "All praise belongs to Allah alone, who has placed in my Ummah people who fulfil their vows and fear a Day whose evil (that is, its hardship and distress) will be widespread. Do you have wealth?" He said: "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take one hundred she-camels as sacrifice, and do it over three years, for you will not find anyone to take them from you all at once."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Rishdin bin Kurayb, who is extremely da'if (weak).
Ata' bin Abi Rabah narrated: A man came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: "I have vowed that I will slaughter myself." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "For you, in the way of the Messenger of Allah, there is an excellent example."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat.
In a narration recorded in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, this statement of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) is reported: Whoever vows that he will sacrifice himself or his child should slaughter a ram. After this the narrator related it as before. Its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
