Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to travel by sea to Syria for trade.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir, and in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat he repeated it with the same chain, but there he recorded these words: "They used to trade in the Haram."
He narrated it from Bulayl bin Ishaq bin Bulayl, from his father, and I have not found anyone who has given their biographies; the remaining narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Al-Hasan narrates: Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) took some people on a sea voyage. News of this reached Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: "He took people in such a state that nothing stood between them and the sea except a few planks. By the One in whose Hand is my soul, by Allah, if those people had perished (the narrator says: perhaps he said this or a word like it), I would have taken their blood money from the people of the tribe of Thaqif (which is the tribe of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Abi al-As (may Allah be pleased with him))."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; the narrator al-Hasan did not hear from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
