Sayyiduna Amr bin Kharijah al-Thumali narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent sacrificial animals with me and said: "If any of them breaks down, sacrifice it, then dip its sandal (which was hung around its neck as a garland) in its blood and with it mark its side; and neither you nor any of your companions should eat from it."
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded something similar in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Layth bin Abi Sulaym, who is thiqah (trustworthy), but he is a mudallis (one who practises tadlis).

Sayyiduna Qays bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the standard-bearer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), narrates that he intended to go for Hajj. He had combed one side of his head when, meanwhile, a sandal was hung around the neck of his sacrificial animal (as a garland). So he began reciting the talbiyah and left the other side of his head as it was.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are the narrators of the "Sahih".

An Ansari man, who was in charge of the sacrificial animals of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him off, I came back and said: O Messenger of Allah! If any of them breaks down (and is no longer fit to travel), what do you command me to do with it? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sacrifice it, dye its sandal in its blood and with it make a mark on its side (the narrator is unsure about one word here), and neither you nor any one of your companions should eat from it."
Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Layth bin Abi Sulaym, who is thiqah (trustworthy), but he is a mudallis (one who practises tadlis).

Sinan bin Salamah al-Hudhali, on the authority of his father,
narrates this report (his father had the honour of being a Companion): The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent two sacrificial camels with a man and said: "If anything befalls them, sacrifice them, dip the sandals in their blood and with it make a mark on their sides, so that it becomes known that they are sacrificial animals." The narrator says: "Mark both sides of each one of them; do not eat anything from them yourself, nor should any of your companions eat; and leave them both for those who come after you."
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Karim bin Abi al-Mukhariq, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he was asked about a man who has with him a voluntary sacrificial animal, and it breaks down before it reaches its destination. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The man should sacrifice it, then dye its sandal in its blood and with it make a mark on its side. If that man eats from its meat himself, he must make it up (by offering another)."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat as a "marfu'" report, and also as a "mawquf" report which is shorter than the "marfu'" one. The chain of all of them contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Abi Layla, who has a poor memory.

Alqamah narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) sent a sacrificial animal with him and said: You and your companions eat one third, give one third in charity, and send one third to my brother Utbah. The narrator says: I asked Sufyan: Was it a voluntary sacrifice? He replied: Yes.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are the narrators of the "Sahih". Before this, in the first chapter on sacrificial animals (hady), a hadith of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about eating from the sacrificial animal has already passed.
