Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Haydah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: I said: "O Messenger of Allah! We are people who ask one another for our wealth." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man may ask when a calamity befalls him, or when a liability (such as compensation or blood-money arising from a fight or killing) falls on him, so that he may set his affair right by it. When he has reached (what he needs), or come close to it, he should then refrain (from asking)."
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Mujahid narrated: A man came to Sayyiduna al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked them both for something. They both said: "Asking is permissible only in three situations: a calamity that causes ruin, a payment one has taken on that weighs one down, or a debt that overburdens one." Then they both gave him something. Then the man came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) simply gave him something without asking him anything. The man said to him: "I went to two of my cousins, and they questioned me, but you did not question me." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The sons of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) were fed knowledge like morsels."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Yunus bin Khabbab, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Asking is not permissible for one who is well-off, except that he may ask a relative or the ruler."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Khirash, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy), while a group declared him da'if (weak). A hadith will come later: "The one who asks has a right, even if he comes on a horse," if Allah wills.
