It is reported about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he did not fast much. He used to say: "If I fast, I become weak for the prayer, and (voluntary) prayer is dearer to me than (voluntary) fasting." When he did fast, he would fast three days each month.
This narration was recorded by Imam al-Tabarani, and its narrators are the narrators of the "Sahih". In some of its routes are these words: "He did not perform the forenoon (Duha) prayer."
Abu Ubaydah reports that his mother said: I never saw Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) fasting except for two days, apart from Ramadan. The narrator says: I do not know what the matter of those two days was.
This narration was recorded by Imam al-Tabarani; its chain contains a narrator whose name has not been given.
Imam al-Sha'bi reports that his paternal uncle said: For a year I kept visiting Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and I never found him keeping (voluntary) fasts in any month other than Ramadan. He used to drink strong nabidh prepared in green jars. In the chain of this narration is a narrator, Ismah bin Sulayman, and a narrator who is the paternal uncle of Imam al-Sha'bi, and I have not found anyone who has given biographical notices of the two of them.
