Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports that Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said: He came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, last night I did something." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What was it?" He said: "The women of the house were with me. They said: 'You can recite and we cannot, so lead us in prayer.' So I led them in eight rak'ahs and the witr." The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. The narrator says: We understood that the silence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was his approval.
Abdullah bin Ahmad recorded it, and its chain contains a narrator who is not named.

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, something happened on my part last night." The narrator says: This was in the month of Ramadan. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What was it, O Ubayy?" He said: "The women of my house said: 'We cannot recite the Qur'an, so we will pray behind you.'" Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b said: "I led them in eight rak'ahs and the witr." The narrator says: So this became the sunnah of approval, since the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said nothing.
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded something similar in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain is hasan (good).
