Sayyidah Asma' bint Zayd (may Allah be pleased with her) says: Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) used to serve the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When he had finished serving the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he would come to the mosque; the mosque was his home, and he would lie down in it. One night the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came in and found Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) sleeping in the mosque. the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) roused him with his foot until he sat up straight. the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do I not see you sleeping?" Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! Then where should I sleep? Do I have any home other than this?" (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: After this the narrator mentioned the whole hadith, which will come later in full in the chapter on the Caliphate, if Allah wills.
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded part of it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Shahr bin Hawshab, about whom there is criticism, and who has also been deemed trustworthy.
